Did you know that at one time tanned skin was the mark of a lower class of people? The aristocrats would never have been caught dead with a tan because it implied they were common workers who acquired the tan by working under the harsh rays of the sun every day. In today’s society, it is now the reverse. Tanning, whether it is indoor tanning or beach tanning, are outward signs to the world of a healthy, sun kissed body. But there is a huge difference between looking healthy and having healthy skin. Sun tanning is not safe at all.
When the body is exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time, damage to the surface skin cells begins to occur. The damage can cause redness and the cells to mutate into skin cancer. It is estimated that one in five people will develop skin cancer sometime in their lives. Tanning in a booth just exacerbates the problem and increases the likelihood that you will get skin cancer.
There are ways to look tanned and golden without damaging your skin in the process. You can have fake tans that look like the real thing. That golden designer skin can be yours with some self tanning lotion. It is easy to apply if you know what you are doing. Most people make the mistake of trying to apply the lotion to dry skin. Fake tans are notorious for streaking and this is why it happens. If you want an even application, then you need to start with freshly exfoliated skin straight from the shower. Dry your body and then apply regular moisturizer. This will eliminate any dry areas that could become too dark during the do-it-yourself tanning process.
The key to avoiding streaking and splotchy patches is to apply a thin coat. You can always go back and apply a second coat later after the first one has dried. When you apply too much of the product, it will run and leave streaks. If you have tried the self tanning lotion and it does not seem to work well on you, then you can always try the new spray tans that most tanning salons have to offer. They are really affordable and the results will last for quite some time.
